Imperial Rome v Dacia
We let the dice decide that Tony, James and Chris commanded the Romans and Tim and I the Dacians. The choice of table edge gave Tim and I the slightly more advantageous table edge with the steep slope of an 8 hex escarpment facing the Romans on our left. A scattering of small areas of woodland punct...

Korean v Chinese (round 2)
The same armies as in the previous game were pitted against each other at the club the following week. We swapped the commanders around and I was in charge of the Chinese this week with Tony and Tim commanding the Koreans. IMG_2571.JPG The terrain consisted primarily of wide open spaces with no hill...

Re: Pilum +5
Hi Bertie, Your idea to add the pilum hits to the hand-to-hand final factor unfortunately will not produce a balanced combat outcome. The pilum result must be applied to the target unit causing a recoil, disruption, flee, no effect etc. Only after this effect has been applied as directed by the comb...

Re: Pilum +5
Hi Bertie, The Roman Pilum has a 1 hex range and can therefore only be used on first hex to hex contact with an enemy unit. The 5+ 'shooting' value will be increased by A1 or A2 armour to 6+ and 7+ respectively. The pilum is a single use weapon that can be used once by any unit during a game on firs...

Medieval Korean v Chinese
The 6 player game pitted a late Ming Chinese army against a Korean army of the Imjin war period. They both had a points value of 280 points so these were pretty large armies with plenty of units for the 3 players on each side to command. We let the roll of the dice decide which players were with whi...

WOTR Lancaster v Tudor
Two identical and typical retinue armies pitted against each other. The dice decided which players went with which armies which gave Chris and Tim the Tudors and Tony and I the Lancastrians. In this battle of equals, only the terrain features could give an advantage to either side and therefore mano...

Ancient British v French 100 Years' War
The French army with 6 mounted and 6 dismounted men-at-arms, 6 crossbows, 3 peasant hordes and 4 generals was pitted against an Ancient British army. The Brits had the usual host of warrior hordes, fanatics and slingers, but more importantly, 3 units of light chariots, 2 units of light cavalry and 2...

French 100 Years War v Imperial Roman
When a medieval army is pitted against a very good ancient army such as the Romans, in many respects this is a test of the Hordes and Heroes rule system. The French army was deliberately constructed as a sound historical example; 6 mounted men-at-arms; 6 dismounted men-at-arms, 6 units of crossbow e...

Hungarian v Ottoman Turks (Game 2)
After the very closely drawn game the previous week, this game simply had to be re-fought. I suppose it could be thought as ‘unfinished business’ with both sides out for a decisive win! The terrain was far more open than in the previous game with a few small areas of woodland positioned away from th...
